Anamnesis

7/14/15

Anamnesis is a Greek word for 'remembrance'.
It includes remembering of things from our past as well as the Christian Church’s Eucharist in which the passion, resurrection, and ascension of Christ are recalled.

This show is about my personal remembrance. I believe, as the writer Madeline L’Engle, writes that “in art, either as creators or participators, we are helped to remember some of the glorious things we have forgotten, and some of the terrible things we are asked to endure…”

I hope this show also creates cosmos from the chaos of my remembrance. Leonard Bernstein says that for him music is cosmos in chaos. I believe all real art is cosmos, cosmos found within chaos. I hope that my remembrance is cosmos within chaos for you.

This show of “anamnesis ” is my response to his command to "Do this in remembrance of me".

Anamnesis: Inspirations from readings for art work

1

PRESENCE

The Real Presence is just that, real and life- transforming. Nor are the conditions for the manifestation of his splendors out of the reach of any of us.

 -Albert Edward Day

We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God. The world is crowded with him. He walks everywhere incognito. And the incognito is not always hard to penetrate. The real labour is to remember, to attend. In fact, to come awake, still more, to remain awake.

-C. S. Lewis

2

GOOD SOIL: MANY DEATHS

The more deaths: the richer the soil.

The harder the winter: the better the spring.

3

MANIFEST

The simplest and oldest way, then in which God manifests Himself is not through people but through and in the earth itself.

As the reaper of his own harvest, man learns both by suffering and bliss.

-James Allen

4

NOW

The spiritual life is not a life before, after, or beyond our everyday existence. No, the spiritual life can only be real when it is lived in the midst of the pains and joys of the here and now.

-Henri Nouwen

5

CIRCLE OF LIGHT

Life, light, love.

These are the same words which indicate the Person of the Father, the Person of the Son, and the person of the Holy Spirit.

Defending life, witnessing light, living out love

-Carlo Carretto

6

FIRE OF GOD

The fire of God, which is his essential being, his love, his creative power, is a fire unlike its earthly symbol in this, that it is only at a distance it burns- that the farther from him it burns the worse, and that when we turn and begin to approach him, the burning begins to change to comfort, which comfort will grow to such bliss that the heart at length cries out with a gladness no other gladness can reach, "Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is nothing upon earth that I desire beside thee!"

-George MacDonald

7

COME

God takes us out of the mean and narrow ways in which we relate, to open before us the great open spaces of potential for our lives. But this can only happen if we expose our true selves to His love.

-James Houston

8

MARANATHA

God of hope, whose spirit gives light and power to your people, empower is to witness to your name in all the nations, to struggle for your own justice against all principalities and powers and to persevere with faith and humor in the tasks that you have given to us. Without you we are powerless. Therefore we cry together: Maranatha.

-Thomas G. Pettepiece

9

RECEIVE

Religion is an awareness of God. It is first of all a desire for what God gives us. It is a free and unforced reaching out for the mercy and love that God offers.

You think religion is a matter of knowing things and doing things. It is not. It is a matter of letting God do something for you: letting him love you, letting him save you, letting him bless you, letting him command you. Your part is to look and believe, to pray and obey.

-Eugene Peterson

10

GATHER

Messiah is eternally and tirelessly bringing everything and everyone together.

-Eugene Peterson

11

ANOTHER WAY TO WRESTLE

Another way to wrestle

To struggle used to be

To grab with both hands

       and shake

       and twist

       and turn

       and push

And shove and not give in

But wrest an answer from it all

As Jacob did a blessing.

But there is another way

To struggle with an issue, a question-

Simply to jump

                        off

                            into the abyss

                            and find ourselves

                                        floating

                                                 falling

                                                 tumbling

                                        being led

                            slowly and gently

                            but surely

to the answers God has for us-

                            to watch the answers unfold

                            before our eyes and still

to be a part of the unfolding.

But, oh! The trust

necessary for this new way!

Not to be always reaching out

For the old hand-holds.

- Susan W. N. Ruach

12

LIFE

There is a world to enjoy, a salvation in which to rejoice. God gives, "Grace is everywhere" (George Bernanos). We receive and explore. We do not nullify the grace of God.

-Eugene Peterson

13

ETERNITY ALDREADY ADVANCES TO RECEIVE US

Eternity already advances to receive us. Why do we delay to advance while the light of the Father of mercies shines for us. Let us hasten to reach the kingdom of God.

-Fenelon

14

Prayer: End of Words

We, too, become tired, deadly tired, of ourselves, of others, of the world, of life, of everything! Then it is blessed to know of a place where we can lay our tired head and heart, our heavenly Father's arms, and say to him, "I can do no more. And I have nothing to tell you. May I lie here a while and rest? Everything will soon be well again if I can only rest in your arms a while."

-O. Hallesby

15

RECEIVE AND OFFER

It is in solitude, in that lonely life alone with God, in profound recollection of soul, in forgetfulness of all created things, that God gives himself to the soul that thus gives itself whole and entire to him. Later the soul will bring forth exactly in the measure in which the inner life is developed in it.

- Charles de Foucauld

16

GOD IN EVERYTHING, HIDDEN IN A CLOUD

To live by faith, then, is to live in joy, confidence, certainty and trust in all there is to do and suffer each moment as ordained by God. However mysterious it may seem, it is in order to awaken and maintain this living faith that God drags the soul through tumultuous floods of so much suffering, trouble, perplexity, weariness and ruin. For faith is needed to discover in all this God and that divine life which can neither be seen nor felt but, nevertheless, in some mysterious way, unmistakably reveals itself. Death in the body, damnation in the soul, ruin in the world are the nourishment and support of faith, which breaking through these, holds on to the hand of God offering life wherever there is no sign of sin. Faithful souls, full of confidence, must see God in everything, hidden in a cloud, whose closer presence disturbs and scares the senses. (SPM p. 23)

17

THY KINGDOM COME

What concerns me is being with you, making you whole. I conquer evil by submitting myself to it, receiving it into myself, and in that act- crucifixion- the power is broken and salvation is accomplished.

-Eugene Peterson

18

A PART OF GOD

You see, God is actually in the flowers and the growing grass and all the little chirping, singing things, He made everything out of Himself and somehow he put a part of Himself into everything. ( HGS p. 31)

19

BANQUET

Steep yourself in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provision.

-Luke 12:22

Enjoy the blessing! Revel in the goodness. Stand in awe of God’s Yes!

-Psalm 128:2

20

FALL

We mostly spend those lives conjugating three verbs: to Want, to Have, and to Do. Craving, clutching, and fussing, on the material, political, social, emotional, intellectual- even on the religious- plane, we are kept in perpetual unrest: forgetting that none of these verbs have any ultimate significance, except so far as they are transcended by and included in, the fundamental verb, to Be: and that Being, not wanting, having, and doing, is the essence of a spiritual life.

-Evelyn Underhill

21

WAITING

Watch, wait and hope. "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchman for the morning, more than watchman for the morning."

-Psalm 130:6

22

JOY

The gloom of the world is but a shadow; behind it, yet within our reach is joy: take Joy.

-Fra Giovanni

23

ENJOY

Poverty is the ability to enjoy the world to the full because I am not anxious about losing a bit of it or acquire a bit of it.

-H. A. Williams

37

HOPE

People who hope never know what’s coming next. They expect it is going to be good, because God is good.

A person with hope is alive to God. Hope is powerful. It is stimulating. It keeps us on tiptoe, looking for the unexpected.

-Eugene Peterson

38

HUMILITY

Humility is the attitude of one who is like the soil. Humility comes from the Latin word humus, fertile ground. The fertile ground is there, unnoticed, taken for granted, always there to be trodden upon. It is silent, inconspicuous, dark and yet it is always ready to receive any seed, ready to give it substance and life. The more lowly, the more fruitful, because it becomes really fertile when it accepts all the refuse of the earth. It is so low that nothing can soil it, abase it, humiliate it; it has accepted the last place and cannot go any lower. In that position nothing can shatter the soul's serenity, it's peace and joy.

-Anthony Bloom

39

STAND STILL

The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.

-Exodus 14:14

40

ETERNITY

We don’t just live for now; we live for eternity.

It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in; aim at earth and you will get neither.

-C. S. Lewis

41

AWE

Awe is a way of being in rapport with the mystery of all reality. The secret of every being is the divine care and concern that are invested in it. Something sacred is at stake in every event.

-Abraham Joshua Heschel

All is Grace: Inspirations from readings for art work

4/16/14

BERAKAH

Berakah is a Hebrew word for blessings.
Grace evokes gratitude like the voice an echo.
Because God blesses us, we bless God. We respond with that which we have received.

SACRIFICE

The Creator Son comes as a man, enters the depths of cosmic chaos which sin has wrought. He takes on himself the full force of the Father’s judgment: the Judge is judged in our place, absorbing the impact of evil and disorder. On the third day, the destruction and distortion are transfigured and redirected. In Christ, all that is ugly and subversive in the cosmos has be purified, beautified and fulfilled. Therein lies the promise for the transformation of all things..

IMAGE OF GOD

Deep in us is brokenness. God with his deep compassion pours his healing love into us.

GLORY OF GOD

The glory of God shines, indeed, in all creatures, on high and below, but never more brightly than in the cross because in giving his life for the world, in emptying himself in servant love, the nature and character of God is fully manifested for the entire world to see.

NO PLEASURE IN CHAINS

God desires to free us captives from any and all forms of bondage.

Also we with God can work for the liberation of others, helping to free them from every form of bondage-religious, economic, cultural, political-that sin uses to stunt or thwart or cram our lives.

COMMUNITY

Creation itself was not complete until there was community, Adam needing Eve before humanity was whole.

Community- a place where each person is taken seriously learns to trust others, depend on others, be compassionate with others, and rejoice with others.

We are set apart for service to one another. We mediate to one another the mysteries of God. We represent to one another the address of God. We are priests who speak God’s Word and share Christ’s sacrifice.

No Christian is an only child.

REDEEMED

God slowly and gently searches, gathers and purifies those parts of us and brings about wholeness.

STANCE OF LIFE

Be blessed by God and then be a blessing to those around you.

LET GO

These are encaustic paintings.
We all try so desperately to work out our lives and relationships. We don’t have to carry it alone. We can let God carry us. He promises that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

SOW

All suffering, all pain, all emptiness, all disappointment is SEED: sow it in God and He will, finally bring a crop of joy from it.

REAP

All suffering, all pain, all emptiness, all disappointment is seed: sow it in God and He will, finally bring a CROP OF JOY from it.

MT. ZION

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which CANNOT BE SHAKEN but endures forever.

SUFFERING

The promise is not that we will not have suffering … but that no injury, no illness, no accident, no distress will have evil power over us, that is, will be able to separate us from God’s purposes in us.
All the water in all the oceans cannot sink a ship unless it gets inside. Nor can all the troubles in the world harm us unless it gets within us.

SHALVAH

Shalvah is a Hebrew word for the RELAXED STANCE of one who knows that everything is all right because God is over us, with us and for us in Jesus Christ.

Dynamis Theou: Inspirations from readings for art work

4/16/14

LET THERE BE LIGHT

In the beginning, astronomers declare, there was only the blackness of space: no movement, no light, no life. Then out of utter stillness there began to be a moving, a pulsing (breath of God? the Word of God going forth?) and this moving and radiating energy was, and is, a kind of light, though the human eye cannot see it. ( HPB p. 12)

DYNAMIS THEO IN REDEMPTION

Divine action cleanses the universe, pervading and flowing over all creatures. Wherever they are it pursues them. It precedes them, accompanies them, follows them. We have only to allow ourselves to be borne along on its tide. (SPM p. 3)

DYNAMIS THEO IN LIFE

God is everywhere. Everything proclaims him to you, everything reveals him to you, everything brings him to you. He is by your side, over you, around and in you. (SPM p. 18)

GOD IN EVERYTHING, HIDDEN IN A CLOUD

To live by faith, then, is to live in joy, confidence, certainty and trust in all there is to do and suffer each moment as ordained by God. However mysterious it may seem, it is in order to awaken and maintain this living faith that God drags the soul through tumultuousfloods of so much suffering, trouble, perplexity, weariness and ruin. (SPM p. 23)

FLOW

When the greatest Conductor of God’s love appeared among men, He found these channels almost completely blocked by many things that were not love. The hate and fear and misery of man had built, as it were, a dam in the very air surrounding this globe, a thought-vibration of evil so powerful that the main current of God’s love could not get through, as sunlight cannot get through a thundercloud. By his outpouring of love He broke that dam, and reconnected man with God, who is love.  (HL p. 40)

ABIDE

We live in God. That’s what we breathe. And this is so whether we know it or not. But we can absorb either more or less of His life-force according to the receptivity of our spirits.  (HL p. 62)

YELLOW IRIS

Having borne our sins He turned them into holiness, and sent them forth into the air again cleansed and purified. Having received man’s hate He turned it into love and directed it out into the world again. So He cleansed the thought-vibrations that surround this globe as a purifying plant cleanses our drinking water, taking it in dirty, throwing it up into the sunlight and sending it forth clean. So He removed the thunder-cloud of man’s hate and released the clear shining of God’s love. (HL p. 122)

DYNAMIS THEO IN CREATION

Creator forever broods over His creation, his arm still strong to save and to re-create, and that he intervenes directly when the need and the faith of man make it possible for Him to do so. He is still able to “manipulate”- to perform, to act, to work His works of salvation of the soul of man and of the soul of this little planet earth. ( HGS p. 20)

VOICE OF GOD

The simplest and oldest way, then in which God manifests Himself is not through people but through and in the earth itself. (HGS p. 25)

STILL

And He still speaks to us through the earth and sea, the birds of the air and the little living creatures upon the earth, if we can but quiet ourselves to listen.

A PART OF GOD

You see, God is actually in the flowers and the growing grass and all the little chirping, singing things, He made everything out of Himself and somehow he put a part of Himself into everything. ( HGS p. 31)

BANQUET

YOU PREPARE A TABLE BEFORE ME

SURELY YOUR GOODNESS AND LOVE WILL FOLLOW ME ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE

AND I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOREVER

BREATH OF GOD

The Spirit and the power of God abide in us. We are not one person but two. In all of you who read, there is the one visible in the mirror, and there is the other one, existing at a different vibration of energy, who is not visible in the mirror. This other one, the spirit or the spiritual body, interpenetrates the body of flesh. You are living in two bodies at the same time. This one is mortal, and the other is immortal. (HPB p. 12)

GOD-the most passionate and persistent of creators.

He is delighted and fascinated with the act of creation, both of things inconceivably great and of things unbelievably small. (HPB p. 25)

CLOTHED IN LIGHT

The original creativity of God that brought forth the worlds in the beginning still shone within them and around them. It was through this light-this creative energy-that man was to continue the work of creation. For the light of God, shining through him, would enrich the earth. The essence of God through him was life unto the earth and the balance of nature was preserved so long as the balance of the spirit was preserved in man.
(HPB p. 28)

WORDS DO NOT DIE

They cry of rage from the murderer, and of anguish from the murdered, fad out from the ear, but not from the heart. The finer vibrations of them remain in the air and, though not audible to the ear, are sensible to the heart. They can be felt though they cannot be heard. And the more emotion there is behind the thoughts. The more they permeate and influence the air and the earth. (HPB p. 36)

POWER RELEASED

God Himself came to earth, and shed his blood willingly to take away the poison of condemnation from the earth. The power of his sacrifice is now realeased to the earth and it is for us to apply it. 9HPB p. 49)

HEALED

Best of all, one can know that the most poisonous thing within us- our darkest secret and our most disgusting sin-can be transformed, lifted up, and made our greatest source of life and healing. (HPB p. 81)

APPERCEPTION

The poet Denise Levertov wrote, “Since almost all experience goes by too fast, too superficially for our apperception, what wer most need is not to re-taste it (just as superficially) but really to taste for the first time the gratuitous, the autonomous identity of its essence.  (RT p. 6)

SEE

“Anything can make us look,” saus poet Archibald MacLeish, “only art makes us see.”

(RT P. 15)

INCENSE-PRAYER

The sense of smell is associated with prayer. The bowls of incense, representing the prayers of the church, can be both seen and smelled. The sense of smell is not only the most subtle and delicate of human senses, it is also he most iconic, in that it involves the entire human sensorium more fully than any other sense. The sense of smell is the sensory analogue to prayer. Prayer cannot be practiced in detachment. Invisible and involving, prayer penetrates and permeates. (RT p. 17)

HEAVENLY FIRE

Christ came to send heavenly fire on earth (RT p. 32) Fire penetrates and transforms.  The fire will burn us until we worship thus; … (p. 35)

CIRLE OF LIGHT

“The light shins in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” Light reveals order and beauty. Or, if there is something to be feared, the light shows the evil in proportionate relationship to all that is not to be feared.
(RT p. 38)

We do not live in darkness, but in light. We are not cursed; we are blessed. Light, not darkeness, is the fundamental reality in which we live. And God is light. (p. 38)

LIGHT

A great effusion of light, a dazzling incandescence. Light cascades from the image in great force and quantity, and floods the churches. It is the first-day light of Genesis, and he light that enlightens every person who comes into the world. The light does two things: it exposes what is sinful to the healing warmth of the light. The light reveals and heals. (RTp. 50)

LIVES DEFACED BY SIN

Light with the colors of precious stones (jasper, carnelian, emerald) bathes everyone gathered in worship. Lives that have been defaced by sin into blurred charcoal outlines arenow seen in their true colors. Every faded tint and wavering line are restored to original sharpness and hue. Precious stones are precious because they collect and intensify light. Light is full of color, all colors. But our dull eyes are unpreceptive.  (RTp 63)

EVIL IS CONTAINED

War is social evil; famine is ecological evil, sicknss is biological evil. War attacks the goodness of community; famine violates and ravages God’s bounty sickness destroys and wastes God-given bodies, sins against society, sins gainst the land, sins against the body.  (p. 80)

Nothing that we experience as evil is unnoticed or unacknowledged. It is all out in the open, included in the preached meaning of history. Christians do not shut their eyes to the world’s cruelty in themselves or others.  (p. 80)

The first seal is revelation of Christ triumphant over evil, and the seventh is a revelation of the attentive silence in heaven in which the prayers of every believer are carefully heard and answered. All evil takes place between that beginning and ending. Evil is contained. (p. 85)

SILENCE

The silence prepares the imagination to receive an incredible truth. (p. 87)

ATTENTIVENESS

He was in a prepared posture of receptivity before God (p. 90)

Passionate waiting that bring us to the point of hearing, seeing and receiving God’s fullness. (p. 91)
